Sykes goes seventh overall, Peterson selected 15th
NEW YORK – For the first time, two members of the Syracuse women's basketball team were selected in the same WNBA Draft as guards Brittney Sykes and Alexis Peterson were selected in the annual draft on Thursday night.
"Over the last few years, we have proven that we have high-level players, All-Americans and professional players," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "Their selections tonight are a testament to what we have built at Syracuse. I cannot overstate how happy I am for both players."
Sykes was the seventh pick in the first round by the Atlanta Dream. After going seventh overall, Sykes is the program's highest draft selection in its history.
"My mission that I set as a freshman was to make history at Syracuse," added Sykes. "I did it. It feels good to know that I left my mark here. Now, I am ready to live my dream of playing professional basketball, beginning with the Atlanta Dream."
Sykes is the winningest player in the history of the Orange women's basketball history, playing in 101 victories. The Newark, N.J. product earned WBCA Division I Coaches All-America Honorable Mention plaudits in her final season on campus. A graduate student pursuing her Master's degree in instructional design, development, and evaluation in the School of Education, she ranks third in program history with 1,846 career points scored.
Peterson was the third selection in the second round, going 15th overall, by the Seattle Storm.
"It is such a blessing to be selected by the Seattle Storm," commented Peterson. "It is crazy to say; I have been wanting this since I picked up a basketball. This really means a lot."
Peterson exits as the program's all-time leader in assists (590) and ranks second in scoring (1,978). The Columbus, Ohio native was named an All-American by three different organizations (Associated Press, espnW, and WBCA) for the 2016-17 campaign. A child and family studies major in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, she was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference honoree.
