Syracuse tops Cornell in the first and second varsity eight races
ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 15 Syracuse men's first varsity eight crew fell just short of its quest for the Goes Trophy, but defeated No. 14 Cornell on its home course on Saturday morning on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
"I thought it was a good first effort," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "Obviously, we are disappointed to lose to Navy. I think that is a good thing that the guys are disappointed. They have high expectations of themselves. Having said that though, I thought it was a solid first go down the course."
After a tough start to the first varsity eight competition, the Orange did not get discouraged and continued to compete over the 2,000-meter course. Over the final 1,500 meters, Syracuse would get through Cornell, but would run out of race course in its venture to overtake Navy.
"We got down early and I think it's easy to start feeling sorry for yourself," added Reischman. "I thought we fought pretty hard to get through Cornell and continue to move back on Navy. But, it's a 2,000-meter race and we ran out of race course."
Similar to the first varsity eight race, the second varsity eight boat got off to a slow start over the opening 500 minutes. The Orange would gather themselves and pass the host Big Red to finish in second place behind the Midshipmen.
The third varsity eight crew finished in third place in the team's first race of the morning. Navy won the race, sweeping the competition.
"We have a pretty young squad, across the board," concluded Reischman. "In our varsity, we don't have a ton of guys that have raced at that level before. We had four or five freshmen in the JV, same with our 3V. Some young guys got some good racing experience. It's going to be fun to coach them and see what kind of improvements we can make."
Syracuse is back in action on Saturday, April 22 when its hosts No. 6 Boston University and No. 16 Columbia at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool.
