Syracuse wins the Conlan Cup for the first time since 2012
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – For the first time since the 2012 campaign, the No. 15 Syracuse men's rowing first varsity eight crew brought home the Conlan Cup when it defeated No. 6 Boston University and No. 18 Columbia on Saturday morning on the Onondaga Lake Outlet.
It marks the second straight season that the Orange have defeated at least one top-10 opponent. Last year, the first varsity eight boat beat No. 10 Dartmouth to collect the Packard Cup on April 24, 2016.
"I just thought that the varsity did a nice job this week of focusing in on their boat and their rhythm," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "Boston University, true to their nature, made a couple of strong pushes in the race at us. Great job by the guys of just executing, sticking to what we do at Syracuse."
After falling behind early in its season opener at Cornell on April 15, Syracuse asserted itself from the start, en route to knocking off its second and third nationally ranked foes of the 2017 campaign. The Orange covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:57.08, more than two seconds faster than second place Boston University.
Syracuse finished in second in the third varsity eight race, its second-best showing of the day. The second varsity eight and first varsity four crews each finished in third place in their respective events.
"I think the advantage on the home course is that the guys really like to race here," added Reischman. "They just really enjoy racing on this course. They get pretty excited for home races and I am sure that fed into what we were doing."
The Orange will close out their regular season slate on Saturday, April 29 when it hosts No. 7 Dartmouth at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool. Racing is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on the Onondaga Lake Outlet.
