
Syracuse Closes Out Regular Season with Loss at #3 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two days after upsetting No. 30 Wake Forest, the Syracuse women's tennis team (8-13, 5-9 ACC) faced another ranked ACC foe in No. 3 North Carolina (27-2, 13-1 ACC) on the road. The Orange came up short, 6-1, against the Tar Heels on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
Gabriela Knutson earned a three-set victory against Sara Daavettila, who is ranked as the eighth best singles player by the ITA. Knutson lost the first set, but bounced back to win the next two for the upset. It was Knutson's 10th singles win of the season. Knutson is currently ranked No. 87 by the ITA.
Knutson wasn't the only Orange player facing a tough opponent, five of North Carolina's six singles players are ranked by the ITA. No. 77 Miranda Ramirez faced the No. 2 singles player in the country, Hayley Carter. Carter is a perfect 21-0 in singles this season and has played all matches at the Tar Heels' top spot. Ramirez put up a fight, but fell, 6-4, 6-2.
Anna Shkudun battled at the No. 3 against No. 31 Jessie Aney, nearly forcing a third set. After falling behind early in the second set, Shkudun came back to tie it, 6-6, but Aney won it in a tiebreaker. Maria Tritou also nearly forced a third set with a 7-5 result in the second.
Libi Mesh and Dina Hegab each dropped their singles matches in straight sets.
North Carolina claimed the doubles point to the begin the match with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
ACC TOURNAMENT
With the conclusion of the regular season, the field has been set for the ACC Tournament. Syracuse, as the 11 seed, will face No. 14-seeded Louisville on Wednesday, April 26 at 1 p.m. in Rome, Ga. The tournament will run from April 26 through April 30.
