No. 6 Dartmouth sweeps No. 7 Syracuse in four events
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – In its final race of the regular season, the No. 7 Syracuse men's rowing team was swept by No. 6 Dartmouth on the Onondaga Lake Outlet on Saturday morning.
"Hats off to Dartmouth," head coach Dave Reischman said. "They came in on our home course and did a number on us. I thought our guys were okay. I don't think we were too far off our mark."
In the first varsity eight competition, the Big Green brought home the Packard Cup with a victory. The Orange trailed from the start in their third race of the year. Syracuse attempted to make up ground over the final 1,000 meters, but every mounting comeback was held off. The Orange would cover the course in 6:01.17, more than two seconds behind their opposition.
"In the varsity race, we did a nice job a couple of times with some moves to stay in contact," commented Reischman. "Again, I thought Dartmouth was certainly the aggressor down the race course."
Similar to the first varsity eight race, Dartmouth displayed a fast start in the second varsity eight competition. Ultimately, Syracuse would not be able to make up the opening gap, falling more than four seconds short.
The Orange third varsity eight and first varsity four crews also finished behind the visiting Big Green boats in their final tune-up before postseason racing.
"We have a couple of weeks until Sprints," added Reischman. "We are really looking forward to the preparation leading up to that. We always point towards the end of the year."
With the completion of the 2017 regular season, Syracuse will prepare for its annual conference championship, the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Men's Sprints. The team will hit the water on Sunday, May 14 in Worcester, Mass.
