Holmgren, Dewes hit out of the park
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Led by a two RBI home run from sophomore Bryce Holmgren and a three RBI smash hit out of the park from senior Alyssa Dewes, Syracuse (19-12, 3-6 ACC) defeated in-state foe Binghamton (9-16, 2-2 AEC) in five innings, 13-1, in game two of the midweek doubleheader at Skytop Softball Stadium. The Orange completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory over the Bearcats in game one.
Syracuse outhit the Bearcats 22 to 7 on the day, as Holmgren, Faith Cain, Sammy Fernandez, Hannah Dossett and Toni Martin each tallied three hits apiece.
Fernandez added four RBI in game two, while Dewes had three and Holmgren had two.
Senior Sydney O'Hara led the way for the Orange from the pitcher's mound in game one, collecting nine strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitch. Freshman Alexa Romero was the game-winning pitcher in the second matchup, as she tallied three strikeouts, two hits and a run in 5.0 innings.
Game One
With the game tied, 4-4, through the bottom of the fourth inning, O'Hara caught one batter looking and one batter swinging before Fernandez made an out in foul territory to put the Orange back up to bat.
O'Hara smacked a single to right field before advancing to third off an error to get into scoring position for SU. With two outs on the board, Holmgren was walked to first to solidify runners on the corners for the Orange.
Cain stepped up to the plate only to hit an RBI double to bring the pair of Holmgren and O'Hara in for the game-deciding runs.
The 'Cuse defense retired 3-of-4 batters in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings to end the first match on top, 6-4.
Game Two
Syracuse came out with fire in the second game, using seven runs in the bottom of the third frame to seal the victory.
Holmgren began the action with a homer after Cain was walked to tally a pair of RBI and the first two of seven runs of the inning.
Syracuse followed it up with a pair of pop ups to put two quick outs on the board.
Nonetheless, a single from Martin and a walk from Dewes put two runners on base before a two-out double to left field from Fernandez tacked on two more runs to the score.
After a pitching change, Hansen tallied an RBI single and O'Hara added an RBI double to left field to increase the score, 8-0.
Cain finished the seven-run frame with an RBI single to bring O'Hara in for the ninth Orange run.
'Cuse went on to tally four more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to force the mercy rule after five innings with the final score, 13-1.
The Orange return to Skytop Softball Stadium this weekend, as they host #1 Florida State for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 7 at 4 p.m.
