SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite a five-run third inning led by a three RBI home run from sophomore Bryce Holmgren, Syracuse (19-15, 3-8 ACC) came up short to No. 1 Florida State (38-1-1, 18-0 ACC), 6-5, in the second game of the series doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium. The Orange dropped the first game of the day to the Seminoles, 13-4, in five innings.
"I thought our kids did a great job," head coach Mike Bosch said. "We talked in between games about not really worrying about the play, but about our character and what our mental state was.
"I thought for seven innings they had a great mental approach to the game and they really fought."
Holmgren was 1-of-3 on the day with a three of Syracuse's five RBI. Senior Sydney O'Hara was 0-of-2 with an RBI, while junior Faith Cain was 0-of-3 with the final SU RBI of the game. Orange leadoff hitter and junior Sammy Fernandez was 2-of-4 on the game with a run, while sophomore Alicia Hansen was 1-of-3 with a run as well.
Freshman lefty pitcher Alexa Romero (7-5) dished out five strikeouts on the nation's top-ranked offense in the second game of today's doubleheader, while junior AnnaMarie Gatti (5-5) tallied two in the first contest.
Game One
The Seminoles kept the Orange scoreless in the first game through 4.5 innings while putting up 13 runs on the 'Cuse defense. Syracuse put together four-straight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in an attempt to avoid the mercy rule, but it wasn't enough as the game was ended after five innings with a score of 13-4.
Game Two
Trailing the Seminoles 4-0 through the top of the third frame, freshman Toni Martin got the momentum started with a leadoff walk. Fernandez followed it with a single up the middle to put runners on first and second.
Hansen tallied a single to right field to load the bases, as O'Hara walked to force a runner home and give the Orange its first run of the game.
With bases still loaded, Cain grounded out to third base for an RBI and the second run of the game. Leaving runners on second and third base, Holmgren stepped up to the plate and smashed a three RBI homer out of the park to give Syracuse its first lead of the weekend.
The Orange held the 5-4 advantage through the fifth inning, until the Seminoles used a two RBI home run to center field to take a one-run lead, 6-5.
Neither team was able to add a run to the score, as FSU outlasted the Orange, 6-5.
Syracuse takes to the road for a five-game stretch, beginning on Wednesday, April 12 with a doubleheader at Canisius. The Orange will then travel to face Pittsburgh for a three-game series.
