First varsity eight earns best finish since the 2012 campaign
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 8 Syracuse men's rowing team outperformed its seeding in three of the four events it competed in at the 2017 Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Men's Sprints at Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.
"The wind conditions made it bit of a free for all coming down the race course today," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "I thought all of our crews raced really hard and performed well. We were very happy to earn one of the automatic qualifier spots for the IRA Championship Regatta. Those are hard to come by in our league."
The first varsity eight boat recorded the team's top finish of the day, placing second in the petite final, eighth overall. The Orange edged out Wisconsin by .002 seconds to earn a runner-up performance. It marks the squad's best showing in the EARC Men's Sprints first varsity eight race since a sixth-place effort in 2012.
Syracuse notched a fourth-place showing in the petite final of the second varsity eight competition. The boat finished in 5:47.122, which propelled it to a 10th-place performance overall. The Orange outperformed its seeding by three positions.
In the third varsity eight competition, Syracuse placed fourth in the petite final, which was good enough to finish 10th overall. The Orange covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:49.931, less than one second behind Cornell.
The fourth varsity eight crew placed third in the petite final, ninth overall. The boat improved its time by more than seven seconds from the morning heats to the afternoon finals.
Syracuse will complete its 2017 campaign at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta, starting on Friday, June 2. The annual national championship regatta will be held on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
