
Four Orange Earn NFCA All-Region Nods

Quad ties program record for regional accolades
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sydney O'Hara was named a First Team All-Mid Atlantic Region selection, while the trio of Alicia Hansen, Alexa Romero and Sammy Fernandez earned Second Team All-Mid Atlantic Region nods, announced Thursday by the NFCA.
The four All-Region accolades ties an Orange program record, as the quad of Erin Downey, Heather Kim, Cassie Morales and Alexis Switenko earned All-Great Lakes Region honors for Syracuse in 2006.

Sydney O'Hara, First Team, Utility/Pitcher
Sydney O'Hara earns her third All-Region honor to become the third Syracuse player with a trio of accolades. A two-time First Team selection, O'Hara is the fourth player to win an award more than once.
A senior and Human Development and Family Studies major with a Physical Education Coaching minor in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, O'Hara led the nation in both batting average (.480) and on-base percentage (.629) at the conclusion of the regular season. She ranked second saves (6) and strikeouts per seven innings (12.6), 12th in walks (45) and 15th in slugging percentage (.837). O'Hara was an All-ACC First Team selection and the only Syracuse player to ever win multiple All-ACC accolades.
A native of Cicero, N.Y., O'Hara rewrote a total of six individual single-season records, headlined by her .476 overall batting average that surpassed a previous record of .393 set in 2006 by Alexis Switenko. O'Hara broke Switenko's slugging percentage record from 2006 (.742), as she boasted an average of .833 this year. She is the new single-season record holder in walks (46), on-base percentage (.626), saves (6) and strikeouts per seven innings (12.6).
The pitcher and first baseman has tallied 60 hits, 37 runs, 10 doubles, four triples and nine home runs so far this season. From the pitcher's circle, O'Hara (9-3) ranks second on the Orange squad with 128 strikeouts over 71.2 innings.
Alicia Hansen, Second Team, Second Base
Alicia Hansen earns her first NFCA All-Region nod after becoming a First Team All-ACC selection at second base.
A sophomore Liverpool, N.Y. native and Information Management and Technology major in the School of Information Studies, Hansen owned the second-highest batting average in ACC games (.474). The second baseman ranked ninth overall in batting average (.379) among conference players and fourth in runs scored (47) at the conclusion of the regular seaon. Hansen was sixth in hits (66) and tied for seventh in at-bats (174).
Hansen owns the second-base batting average on the Orange roster and has recorded 48 runs, 67 hits, a team-high 12 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBI on the year. She has an on-base percentage of .426, the third-highest on the SU team.
Alexa Romero, Second Team, Pitcher
Alexa Romero, a native of Aurora, Colo., becomes the first freshman to pick up an NFCA regional honor since O'Hara was a First Team selection at Utility Pitcher in 2014.
A freshman left-handed pitcher and Selected Studies: Post-Secondary and Human Services major in the School of Education, Romero has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the circle this season. The rookie owns the top-mark in strikeouts (155) while holding an ERA of 2.79. She is tied for third all-time among Syracuse freshman in both shutouts (6) and saves (2). She earned All-ACC Freshman Team honors to become Syracuse softball's first player to achieve the accolade.
At the conclusion of the regular season, Romero (12-7) was ranked in 10 pitching categories – eighth in ERA (2.72), fourth in opposing batting average (.213), fourth in batters struck out (154), tied for second in batters struck out looking (40), tenth in wins (12), tied for sixth in saves (2), eighth in hits allowed (111) seventh in runs allowed (66), ninth in earned runs allowed (55) and ninth in doubles allowed (16). Romero was ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 18.
Sammy Fernandez, Second Team, Shortstop
Hailing from Carmel, N.Y., Sammy Fernandez earns her first NFCA regional honor at shortstop.
A Health and Physical Education major in the School of Education, Fernandez owns a pair of single-season offensive records for SU in hits (197) and at-bats (195), both of which were previously held by Lisaira Daniels in 2011.
Fernandez converted for the Orange on both offense and defense, as the junior finished the season with a third-best .358 batting average. She led 'Cuse in hits (72) and at-bats (201), while holding a slugging percentage of .438 and an on-base percentage of .374. Hitting in the lead-off spot, Fernandez struck out just 11 times in 50 games. She also led the Orange in stolen bases (16) and held two 11-game hit streaks throughout the season.
