Knight Wins Payton Jordan Invite
In a meet filled with professionals and some of the world's best distance runners, it was Syracuse junior Justyn Knight who stole the show, posting the world's best time of 2017 in the 5,000-meters and coming away with the win at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
Knight raced to a time of 13:17.51, besting his own school record by nearly 10 seconds and holding off Australia's Sam McEntee at the line to win by 0.04 seconds. Gabriel Geay of Posso Sports finished third in 13:20.35, rounding out the podium both at the event and serving as the top-three times in the world.
The next-fastest collegian in the event was defending NCAA Champion Edward Cheserek, who posted a time of 13:24.72, which was good for fourth.
Knight is the second member of the Orange this season to post one of the world's three-fastest times in their respective event, with Freddie Crittenden III posting a 13.42 that stood as the world's third-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles earlier this season. Crittenden's mark is now 10th but still stands as the second-fastest mark in the NCAA.
Besides Knight, Adam Palamar also took on the Payton Jordan Invite Friday night, racing to a time of 3:42.70 in the 1500 meters. His time was the seventh fastest in his heat and eighth fastest overall. The Nike Oregon Project's Eric Jenkins won the event in 3:38.30.
Knight and Palamar will now compete in the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Georgia next weekend.
