Rubber match on the line
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 seed Syracuse (31-18, 10-10 ACC) takes on tournament host and No. 3 seed North Carolina (36-18, 14-9 ACC) in the Quarterfinal of the 2017 ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The pair square off in a rubber match of this season's split two-game series in April, as the series finale was cancelled due to weather. The first pitch will be thrown at 7:30 p.m.
The winner of Thursday's game will take on the winner of the matchup between second-seeded Louisville and No. 7 seed NC State. The semifinal game is set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12.
All games will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and RSN, while live stats will be available.
The Orange trail the Tar Heels 4-7 in the all-time series, as UNC has claimed three of the five most recent meetings dating back to last season. Syracuse defeated North Carolina 8-2 in eight innings in the series opener last year, before the Tar Heels came through for back-to-back wins, 3-1 and 2-1, to win the series in Chapel Hill. This season, the pair split the two-game series, as SU won game one, 3-1, and UNC claimed game two, 11-10, in nine innings.
Last season, North Carolina was 32-25 overall and 13-11 in the ACC. UNC defeated Boston College 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, before falling to eventual tournament champion Florida State, 7-1, in the semifinal round. The Tar Heels earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, where they defeated Longwood, 6-4, before falling to #7 JMU and Longwood, 10-1 (6 innings) and 5-4 (9 innings) respectively, to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Tar Heels are the No. 3 seed and this year's host for the ACC tournament.
