Finished 13th overall at the 2017 NCAA Championship
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Head coach Justin Moore has returned the Syracuse women's rowing program to national prominence since taking over at the helm in July 2010. In his seven seasons, the Orange have earned two trips to the NCAA Championship and six top three conference championship finishes.
Syracuse earned an at-large invitation to the 2017 NCAA Championship on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., its third trip to the annual national championship regatta in the history of the program. It also marked the first time that the team had collected consecutive bids to the NCAA Championship. Behind 11th-place showings from the second varsity eight and first varsity four boats, the Orange finished in 13th place at the 2017 NCAA Championship, matching its finish from a year ago.
Syracuse narrowly missed earning an automatic invite to the NCAA Championship, by virtue of finishing in second place at the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. The second varsity eight crew chased down 17-time defending conference champion Virginia in an epic finish to claim the grand final. It marked the team's first individual conference title as a league member and first since winning the first varsity four competition at the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
Following the competition, Moore was named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year, his first honor since taking over the Orange program. The second varsity eight boat was named the 2017 ACC Crew of the Year, as well. It marked the team's second and third individual postseason honors since joining the conference.
Senior Harriet Taylor would go on to become the ninth All-American in Syracuse women's rowing history, earning 2017 Division I Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America Second Team accolades. Taylor also was recognized on the 2017 All-ACC First Team and CRCA All-Region 3 First Team.
Senior Alexandra Gill collected 2017 All-ACC First Team and CRCA All-Region 3 Second Team honors, while sophomore coxswain Rebecca Spraggins earned All-ACC Second Team plaudits.
The first varsity eight boat tallied ACC Crew of the Week honors three times during the regular season. It marked the first time that a boat was named the ACC Crew of the Week three times in a year since Virginia's first varsity eight boat did so during the 2014 campaign.
Moore will look to continue to guide the program to new heights. The future remains bright for the Orange, as 18 of the 23 student-athletes that participated in the 2017 NCAA Championship will return next season.
