Syracuse can finish as high as seventh in two events
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Following semifinal competition on Saturday morning, the first and third varsity eight crews of the No. 11 Syracuse men's rowing team will take part in the petite finals at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta on Lake Natoma.
It marks the first time since the 2013 season that Syracuse has multiple boats in petite finals at the annual national championship regatta. In addition, it is the Orange first varsity eight crew's first trip to either to a grand or petite final since placing fifth during the 2012 campaign.
Syracuse just missed a bid to the IRA Championship first varsity eight grand final, finishing in fourth place in the A/B semifinals on Saturday morning. The Orange covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:44.149, less than four seconds behind third-place Brown. Syracuse has already clinched its best performance since 2012 and can finish no worse than 12th place.
"The varsity eight has had two very solid races so far and we are excited to see what they can do tomorrow," head coach Dave Reischman said. "In the semifinals today, we executed well and had great effort. The guys were disappointed to the miss the grand final, but recognize they had their best race at the most important time of the season."
The Orange recorded a sixth-place effort in the third varsity eight A/B semifinals and will head to Sunday morning's petite final. Syracuse is looking to claim its top effort in the third varsity eight competition since an 11th-place finish in 2014.
The second varsity eight boat notched a third-place showing in the C/D semifinals on Saturday and will compete in the third-level final on the last day of racing. The Orange can finish as high as 13th place, and no worse than 18th place overall.
"The second and third varsity eight are gaining a lot of valuable experience," added Reischman. "Both have had two good races and one race that was a bit off their mark. We are excited to see if all of our crews can have their best races of the season in the finals."
Syracuse's second varsity eight crew will hit the water at 1:20 p.m. EST in its final race of the year. The third varsity eight boat will make its run down the course at 1:50 p.m. EST, while the first varsity eight crew will race at 3:15 p.m.
