Orange Lead U.S., Canada to FIL World Cup Semifinals

GUILDFORD, England – Current and former Orange played critical roles in leading Team USA and Team Canada to quarterfinal victories at the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Guildford, England on Wednesday, July 19. The top-seeded U.S. will take on No. 4 seed and host England in the semifinals on Thursday at 1 p.m. Eastern time, while No. 2 seed Canada faces Australia at 10 a.m.

Michelle Tumolo '13, Becca Block '13 and Kayla Treanor '16 combined for 14 points to lead Team USA to a 20-3 victory against Israel. The squads traded goals to start the game before the U.S. went on a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead for good. Tumolo recorded assists on three of the four tallies. Team USA led 8-3 when Treanor put together a scoring run of her won, scoring four straight goals in a span of 7:18 to put the game out of reach. The U.S. offense continued to dominate and Block capped the scoring with her first goal of the World Cup for the 20-3 final. Tumolo led all scorers with seven points on a goal and six assists, while Treanor was right behind with six points on four goals and two assists. Team USA will now face England, a team it beat, 18-1, on Saturday.

Rising senior Alie Jimerson led Team Canada to a 16-1 victory against New Zealand in the second quarterfinal of the day. She led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist. Canada dominated the game and never trailed as it netted the first 11 goals of the game. Rising senior Taylor Gait scored a pair of goals in the win. The Canadians' semifinal with Australia is a rematch of their first game of the tournament. Team Canada posted a 9-5 victory in that contest.

In the first game of the day, the Haudenosaunee Nationals defeated the Netherlands, 19-11. Awehiyo Thomas '09 helped the Haudenosaunee jump out to an early lead. She scored a pair of goals during the team's 6-0 scoring run to the start the game. Katie Smith scored on an assist from Erin Francis '17 to give the Haudenosaunee its largest lead of the day at 17-5 with less than 15 minutes remaining, but the Netherlands scored six straight goals to cut the deficit to six with 3:14 on the clock. Francis halted the run with her second goal of the day and the Haudenosaunee added an insurance goal with 13 seconds left for the 19-11 victory. Thomas led the squad with five points (4g, 1a), while Francis had two goals and an assist. Rising sophomore Wadata:wi Bomberry had two assists, while Amber Hill-Donhauser '10 made three saves in the first half.
