Stangel enters fifth season on the coaching staff
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Justin Stangel has been promoted to associate head coach of the Syracuse men's rowing program, head coach Dave Reischman announced on Tuesday morning. A Syracuse and USRowing national team alum, Stangel enters his fifth season on the men's rowing coaching staff.
"Justin has done a tremendous job as our recruiting coordinator over the past four years," Reischman said. "His success as an athlete here at Syracuse, Oxford, and the United States national team give him a broad range of experiences to inform his coaching and that is invaluable to our student-athletes. His efforts in recruiting and mentoring our young athletes have been an essential part of our return to the top 10 nationally and this promotion recognizes his value to our program."
Stangel joined the Orange men's rowing coaching staff in 2013 after serving as an assistant coach with the women's rowing program for one season. In his four years on staff, Syracuse has appeared in the top 20 of the USRowing Coaches Poll in every rankings release. This past year, the Orange finished in eighth place at the IRA Championship Regatta, its best showing since a fifth-place performance in 2012.
A native of Madison, Wis., Stangel was a member of the United States senior national team from 2010-12, most recently training at the Oklahoma City High Performance Training Center. In that time, he notched three top-eight finishes at the World Championships and participated in the 2012 United States Olympic Trials.
After graduating from Syracuse in 2007 with a Bachelor's degree in health and exercise science, he attended Oxford University in Oxford, England, earning a Master's degree in science and medicine of athletic performance in 2009. While at Oxford, Stangel served as the vice president of the University Boat Club from 2008-09.
At SU, Stangel helped lead Reischman's Orange to nine cup race wins in his junior and senior seasons. He also helped guide Syracuse's first varsity eight crew to an eighth-place finish at the 2006 IRA Championship Regatta.
