Stangeland's Late Goal Gives Orange 2-1 Win at SIUE
8/27/2017 9:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Freshman Petter Stangeland scored with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to give No. 8/11 Syracuse a 2-1 win at SIU Edwardsville on Sunday, August 27. It marked the second straight one-goal win for the Orange to open the season.
Â
"It was a dramatic last 90 seconds," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "SIUE is a good team that went to the Sweet 16 last season. We weren't at our best as we have some guys who are running on empty. But we found a way to win the match."
Â
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Syracuse (2-0) took the lead in the 16th minute when sophomore Johannes Pieles intercepted the ball in the Orange's offensive end and put a shot past SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Del Santo, who was off his line. The Cougars (0-2) recorded the equalizer in the 49th minute when Lachlan McClean scored on an assist from Jorge Gonzalez.
Â
The score remained tied until the 90th minute. SIUE was awarded a free kick at the top of the box in its offensive end after the Orange were assessed a red card. Syracuse won the ball back and pushed the ball forward. Pieles passed it on to Stangeland, who took the ball in stride and flicked it past the goalkeeper for the game winner.
Â
OF NOTE
Stangeland became the second freshman to score a game winner for the Orange this season. Fellow rookie Tajon Buchanan recorded the golden goal in overtime in the season opener Friday at St. Louis.
Â
"With the turnover we've had, we're going to need the new guys to step up," McIntyre said. "They will certainly remember their first goals because of the importance of the them – one in overtime and one in the last 30 seconds of the game."
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse will play its home opener on Friday, Sept. 1 on the first day of the Central New York Classic. The Orange host Princeton at 3 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free.
