Howard Paces Orange Past Panthers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Frank Howard posted 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals to lead Syracuse (13-6, 2-4 ACC) to a 59-45 victory over Pittsburgh (8-11, 0-6 ACC) Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome. The win snaps the Orange's four-game losing streak.
Sophomore Tyus Battle added 15 points, freshman Oshae Brissett finished with 10 points and five boards and junior Paschal Chukwu recorded eight points and eight rebounds.
How it was Decided
With Syracuse clinging to a two-point lead with 9:46 remaining, a 12-2 run over a time span of 7:09 helped the Orange pull away. Howard made a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Battle and a Howard 3-point play. Pitt added two free throws, but a Chukwu dunk, two foul shots by Howard and a Battle layup gave Syracuse a 51-37 lead with 2:37 remaining.
Game Summary
Matthew Moyer made a layup along and Brissett added 3-pointer to pull Syracuse ahead 14-9 with 11:31 to play in the first half. Parker Stewart hit his fourth trey of the first half and Pittsburgh added two foul shots with another 3-pointer to take a 22-19 lead.
Brissett drained a jumper followed by a Battle layup to help the Orange take a 23-22 lead. Howard added two foul shots and Battle beat the buzzer with a floater to give Syracuse a 27-22 halftime lead.
A Chukwu bucket along with a Brissett trey gave the Orange a 36-29 advantage early in the second half. Stewart answered right back with a 3-point field goal to pull the Panthers back within four. Jared Wilson-Frame converted a 3-point play later in the half to trim Pittsburgh's deficit to two.
Numbers of Note
Syracuse shot 22-of-51 (43.1 percent) from the floor and 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line while holding the Panthers to 14-of-40 (35.0 percent) from the floor. The Orange won the battle in the paint, outscoring Pittsburgh 28-12.
For the second time this season, Syracuse held its opponent to 45 points. The Orange forced 18 turnovers, with 10 steals, and blocked four shots. Aside from the sharp-shooting from Stewart, Syracuse held the rest of the Panthers to 1-of-10 from 3-point range.
Stewart finished the game with 23 points for the Panthers. He shot 8-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-13 from beyond the arc. Stewart compiled more than half of the Pittsburgh points (51.1 percent).
