Orange Rally but Fall Short at Miami

Coral Gables, Fla. – Syracuse University's women's basketball team overcame a 16-point first half deficit in Thursday night's 72-65 loss at Miami. The Orange move to 14-5 overall and 2-4 in the ACC while the Hurricanes improve to 13-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.
'Cuse returns home on Sunday, Jan. 21, for an ACC matchup with Pittsburgh. With over 13,000 tickets sold, the Orange intend to break the program's single-game attendance record of 11,021 set last season against Notre Dame.
Tiana Mangakahia fell one rebound shy of the program's first points-rebounds-assists triple-double in school history. The Australia native had 17 points, nine rebounds and a game-high 14 assists in the loss. Miranda Drummond also chipped in while Gabrielle Cooper and Amaya Finklea-Guity each had 11 points. It marked the first time since Dec. 22, 2017 that four members of the Syracuse squad scored in double figures.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange took the first lead on a 3-pointer by Mangakahia but Miami responded and exchanged baskets with the Orange over the next four minutes. Syracuse took its largest lead of the game, 14-7, at the 4:54 mark and headed into the first quarter media timeout. Miami responded with a 10-0 run after the pause and evened the score at 17-all with 2:08 to go. The two remained knotted at the end of the frame as the scoreboard read 22-22.
The Canes began the second quarter on a 17-4 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 42-26, with just over three minutes to play in the first half. Syracuse cut the deficit to 11 at the break after finishing the final three minutes on a 5-0 run to trail 42-31.
Syracuse outscored the Hurricanes 20-13 in the third quarter and improved to shoot 53.3 percent in the frame. Miami's hot hands went cold in the quarter shooting a game-low 29.4 percent from the field and 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The Orange trailed 55-51 at the end of the third stanza.
A jumper by Tiana Mangakahia made it a one-possession game with Miami in front 55-53 but once again, the Hurricanes pulled ahead by four. That would happen twice more over the next three minutes but each time the Hurricanes responded and were able to hold off Syracuse for a five-point win.
OF NOTE
Mangakahia's near triple-double would have been the first points-rebounds-assist triple-double in program history. She becomes the first player to record 14 assists in a game against Miami breaking the previous mark set by Austin Peay's Emily Pollock on Nov. 28, 2008, who recorded 10.
