SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team rolled to a 3-0 record after defeating Columbia, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club. The Orange used a pair of two-set singles victories and a dominant doubles display to take the win.
"It was a great win and we knew that it was going to be a tough match," said head coach Younes Limam. " There were a lot of close matches and sets but we stayed calm under pressure. I was glad to see the whole team come together and fight and find a way to win."
Despite facing a tougher doubles competition than they've seen all year, the Orange came out of the doubles round with the point after 6-3 victories by both the No. 1 pair (Miranda Ramirez/Gabriela Knutson) and the No. 3 duo (Maria Tritou/Libi Mesh).
In the singles round of the match, Knutson extended her win streak to three matches with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Ramirez was the only other Orange to earn a two-set win, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Dina Hegab was the match-clincher coming back from a second-set loss to defeat her Columbia opponent 6-1 in the final set. Tritou finished just after her, winning the final two sets in her match to give Syracuse the 5-2 victory.
The Orange hit the road for the first time in the 2018 season, opening conference play at Virginia on Feb. 3. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
