CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Syracuse tennis team (3-1) took its first loss of the season, 4-3, at Virginia (3-2) on Saturday morning.
"The ladies played their hearts out today but just came out a few points from getting the result that they deserved," said head coach Younes Limam. "We are very encouraged by where we are headed and looking forward to keep getting better."
The Orange started the match strong, taking a pair of victories in the doubles round by the No. 2 duo (Dina Hegab and Maria Tritou) and the No. 3 pair (Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun). Each doubles pairing one their respective matches 6-4 to give Syracuse the early 1-0 lead.
The Cavaliers tied it at one with a victory in the No. 6 singles match but the next two points went the way of Syracuse as Hegab and Gabriela Knutson each won the No. 5 singles and No. 1 singles matches, respectively.
Hegab completed a two-set victory over Virginia's Erica Susi, winning both sets 6-3, while Knutson dropped her first set, 3-6, but played out a three-set battle to take her singles point. Knutson and Hegab are the sole Orange with 4-0 records in singles play this season.
Despite the early 3-1 lead for the Orange, it was all Cavaliers for the final three matches, as Virginia tallied three consecutive wins to snag the 4-3 victory. The final point came down to the No. 2 singles match between Miranda Ramirez and Virginia's Cassie Mercer. With the match tied at one set apiece, the pair battled it out in set three with Mercer coming out ahead, 7-6, after a 7-4 tiebreak, to clinch the match for Virginia.
The Orange return home to Drumlins to kick-off a three-game homestand against Connecticut on Feb. 9. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
