Orange Fall Short in Comeback Bid
1/9/2018 10:52:00 PM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team came up short, 6-3, against in-state rival No. 6 Cornell despite outshooting the Big Red, 23-18. Three different Orange scored for Syracuse in the contest, while nine different players recorded a shot on goal.
"Credit to Cornell because they really came out like gangbusters in the first 20 minutes but I'm really proud of the way we responded," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We really took it to them in the second period and showed a lot of heart and desire. We have to learn from it and move on."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Cornell jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 28 seconds into the game but sophomore Kelli Rowswell responded five minutes later, sniping a wrister over the left shoulder of the Cornell goalie to make it a 1-1 game. The Big Red broke the tie just two minutes later with their second goal of the game but once again the Orange responded with a score, this time off the stick of redshirt junior Brooke Avery.
With four minutes left in the first, Cornell found some momentum, notching a pair of late-period goals to take a 4-2 lead into the first intermission. The Orange would not go down without a fight as Alysha Burriss capitalized on a rebound to tally her fourth goal of the season just four minutes into the second period.
Down 4-3 with 1:30 remaining in the game, Syracuse pulled senior Abbey Miller from the net for the extra attacker. Despite pressure in the offensive zone by the Orange, Cornell was able to hold on and dumped in two empty netters to take a 6-3 victory.
OF NOTE
After scoring only one goal through the first the first 18 games of the season, Burriss has started off hot in 2018, tallying three goals in three games played in the second half of the season. The senior now ranks tied for fifth in program history with 37 career goals.
With Avery's goal and a pair of assists by redshirt sophomore Lindsay Eastwood, the duo are both riding three-game point streaks dating back to game one at Robert Morris. Eastwood has tallied back-to-back two-assist games and leads the team in points (15) and assists (13).
