AKRON, Ohio – Senior Jonathan Hagman recorded his first career hat trick to lead Syracuse to a 3-1 victory at Akron in men's soccer action on Monday, Oct. 1. It marked the second multiple-goal game of his career.
Â
"This was an important night and I'm delighted for our guys because they have worked so very hard," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "For them to finally get a result for their efforts is pleasing. This is a tough place to play against a good team. I thought we managed the game in the second half very well. We took chances when they presented themselves."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Junior Massimo Ferrin started the play that led to Syracuse's first goal when he played the ball long on the right side to sophomore Tajon Buchanan, who put his shot on goal. Akron goalkeeper Ben Lundt blocked the shot but couldn't control the ball. Hagman beat a Zips' defender to the loose ball and put his shot in the back of the net in the 29th minute for his first goal of 2018.
Â
Hagman's second goal also came off a rebound on a shot by Buchanan. Akron (4-4-1) tried to clear the ball off an Orange (4-4-1) corner kick, but sophomore Djimon Johnson served it back into the box where Buchanan got off a diving header. Lundt stopped the shot but the deflection again went to Hagman, who put away his shot in the 52nd minute to extend Syracuse's advantage to 2-0.
Â
Junior Severin Soerlie created Hagman's third goal when he eluded two Akron defenders and slid the ball into the box at the endline. Lundt once again got a hand on the ball, deflecting it to Hagman, who netted his career-high third goal of the night in the 66th minute.
Â
OF NOTE
Hagman became the 33rd player in program history to record at least three goals in a game and the first since current student assistant Ben Polk accomplished the feat against Pittsburgh on Oct. 25, 2015.
Â
Buchanan had a career-best two assists. He now leads the team in points (10) and is tied for the top spot in goals (3) and assists (4).
Â
Senior goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made three saves and recorded his 32nd career win, a total that ranks fourth on Syracuse's all-time record list.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium to host No. 1-ranked and undefeated Wake Forest on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
