SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Home sweet home.
The Syracuse hockey team is back in Tennity Ice Pavilion for the first time this regular season, hosting College Hockey America (CHA) foe Mercyhurst for two games over the weekend. Friday's home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the puck drops in Saturday's series finale at 3 p.m. All the action will broadcast live on Cuse.tv.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Syracuse and Mercyhurst meet for the 48th and 49th time this weekend. Mercyhurst holds an all-time record of 38-6-3 against Syracuse dating back to Nov. 2008.
The Lakers won four of the five meetings between the two programs last year, including a 3-2 triumph in the semifinals of the 2018 CHA Tournament to eliminate the Orange. Syracuse's win at home against Mercyhurst last season (Jan. 26, 2018) snapped a three-game losing streak.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse opened up its 2018-19 regular season with a 5-1 setback at Boston College Oct. 6.
Redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery scored the Orange's first goal of the year while senior goaltender Maddi Welch made 27 saves in the game, matching her career high. Freshman forward Abby Moloughney and sophomore defender Jessica DiGirolamo were credited with assists on Avery's goal.
The Orange had 23 shots on net in the game, led by freshmen forwards Lauren Bellefontaine and Marielle McHale, who each had three. Graduate student defenseman Dakota Derrer had a game-high six blocks.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
The Lakers 0-4 on the season after opening the year with a pair of losses on the road at No. 3 Minnesota and at home against No. 2 Wisconsin.
Forwards Emma Nuutinen and Emily Pinto lead the Lakers with two goals apiece. Goaltender Kennedy Blair started three of the Lakers' first four games and has 91 saves.Â
HEARÂ FROM COACH FLANAGAN
"Mercyhurst's 0-4, but that's very deceiving. They're always a good team. It doesn't matter who's in their lineup, they're always aggressive. They work their tails off, and they're well-coached. We just have to be prepared because if we're not, it's a long weekend."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are on the road for their next three games after this weekend. Syracuse plays CHA opponent Lindenwood in a two-game series next Friday and Saturday before a midweek matchup against in-state rival Cornell.
