SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse set two men's SU Soccer Stadium records in its 7-0 victory against St. Bonaventure on Oct. 16. The win extends the Orange's unbeaten streak to five and improves their record to 7-4-2 overall.
Â
The seven goals are the most Syracuse has scored in a match since Oct. 10, 1990 when it defeated Niagara, 7-1, and the highest total for a men's team at the SU Soccer Stadium since it opened in 1996. In addition, Syracuse's 26 shots are the most in stadium history.
Â
"We started extremely well," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "Two goals in the first five minutes really set the tone for the game. These (games) are difficult, between the travel coming back from Louisville and hitting the road again for NC State. We talked early in the season that our ability to go on a bit of a run and a bit of a journey this year would be dictated by our ability and appetite to win these Monday and Tuesday games. And we've been good this year. We've had a good non-conference record and this was a good way to cap it off."
Â
Sophomore Tajon Buchanan again led the Orange offense with his first career hat trick. It marked his second straight multiple-goal game as he increased his team-leading point total to 20, becoming the first Syracuse player to reach that mark since Ben Polk posted 28 points in 2015.
Â
Sophomore Sondre Norheim scored a career-high two goals, while freshman Hilli Goldhar recorded a season-high two assists. In addition, freshman Julio Fulcar scored his first career goal.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse took the lead for good in the fourth minute when Norheim directed his header into the goal off a corner kick by senior Hugo Delhommelle. The Orange didn't take long to strike again as Buchanan recorded his first goal 1:55 later. Buchanan scored again in the 21st minute off an assist from sophomore Simon Triantafillou to give Syracuse a 3-0 halftime lead.
Â
Fulcar started the scoring in the second half in the 59th minute and Buchanan completed his hat trick just over a minute later to extend the Orange advantage to 5-0. Goldhar was credited with assists on both goals. Junior Severin Soerlie added a goal in the 71st minute and Norheim capped the scoring with a blast from 30 yards out for the 7-0 final in Syracuse's final regular-season non-conference match.
Â
UP NEXT
Syracuse begins a stretch where it will play three games in seven days when it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to take on No. 21 NC State on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack is coming off an upset of then No. 1 North Carolina last weekend.
