SYRACUSE, N.Y. - One day after returning from a two-win road trip to Lindenwood, the Orange are on the road again.
The Syracuse hockey team heads to Ithaca, N.Y., Tuesday, Oct. 23, for a midweek matchup against in-state opponent No. 7 Cornell. The puck drops at 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN+.
"They're a well-coached, very well-prepared team," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "They're going to be ready for us Tuesday night in their barn. We're coming off our longest trip of the year, so we'll get together tomorrow, get on the bus, go down there and hopefully build off of the offensive explosion from the weekend."
ABOUT THE SERIES
Cornell leads the series with an all-time record of 10-1-0. The Orange's first and only series win came in the first meeting between the two teams in 2010.
Syracuse lost both matchups against the in-state foe last season. The Orange suffered a 6-3 setback at home against Cornell before losing 5-0 on the road.Â
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse enters the weekend 2-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in CHA play, picking up its first two wins of the year on the road against conference opponent Lindenwood.
Sophomore defenseman Jessica DiGirolamo is the Orange's leading point-getter through five games this season, pacing the team with six points (three goals, three assists). Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine and sophomore forward Emma Polaski also have three goals this season.
Goaltenders senior Maddi Welch and junior Ady Cohen have split the duties in net this season. Welch has 69 saves (.852 save percentage) in three games while Cohen has 35 saves (.875 save percentage) in two games.
ORANGE RECOGNIZED
Junior forward Anonda Hoppner and Bellefontaine were tabbed as CHA Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their performances in Syracuse's two-win weekend at Lindenwood.
Hoppner earned the Player of the Week honor after recording four points in the two wins. She had an assist in Friday's 5-4 overtime win before scoring a shorthanded goal and tallying two more assists in Syracuse's 6-3 win Saturday.
Bellefontaine, meanwhile, garnered the Rookie of the Week honor following the first multi-goal game of her career. She scored two goals and added an assist in the win Saturday, assisting on the game's opening goal before scoring two second-period goals of her own.
SCOUTING CORNELL
Tuesday night's contest is Cornell's first of the season. The Big Red went 21-9-3 last season and are currently ranked seventh in the nation.
Cornell is coached by Doug Derraugh, who enters his 14th season at the helm. The Big Red are 243-143-36 under his guidance.
Forward Kristin O'Neill is a key returner for the Big Red. She was the Ivy League Player of the Year last season, leading Cornell in goals (20), assists (21), points (41) and plus/minus (+26).
HEAR MORE FROM COACH FLANAGAN
"Hopefully, we can build off [the success at Lindenwood], play solid defense against an always dynamic Cornell team and get out of there with a win."
"You always know [Cornell's] good, prepared and doing a great job recruiting. It's always a challenge, but that's why we play them."
"They're one of the best teams in the country the last bunch of years. I look at it as an opportunity to knock off a top 10 team."
