CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery scored the Orange's first goal of the year, but the Syracuse hockey team suffered season-opening 5-1 setback at No. 6 Boston College Saturday afternoon. Syracuse is now 0-1-0 overall and 0-0-0 in College Hockey America (CHA) play.
"I thought we had some decent stretches today where the play was back-and-forth," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Unfortunately, we made some costly mistakes that Boston College capitalized on. They're a fast team that transitions well, and they have some high-end offensive players."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Boston College took control of the game with two goals in the opening period. Senior goaltender Maddi Welch made 12 of her 27 saves in the first period, facing a barrage of shots in the first 20 minutes.Â
The nationally-ranked Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the second period, scoring twice more. Boston College's Megan Keller scored the team's third goal on a power play before Daryl Watts' shot found the back of the net with just over a minute left to play in the period.
Avery, the Orange's alternate captain, put Syracuse on the board in the third period, scoring a power play goal at the 7:04 mark to cut the deficit to 4-1. Her first goal of the year was the Orange's first of the year, and freshman forward Abby Moloughney and sophomore defender Jessica DiGirolamo were credited with assists.
Boston College tacked on its fifth goal at the 12:10 mark, holding off a flurry of Syracuse shots in the final 10 minutes and winning, 5-1.
OF NOTEÂ
Welch's 27 saves matched her career high. She tallied the same amount as a sophomore, recording 27 in a 3-0 loss against Bemidji State Oct. 1, 2016.
The Orange had 23 shots on net, led by freshmen forwards Lauren Bellefontaine and Marielle McHale. The first-year newcomers each had three shots.
Graduate student defenseman Dakota Derrer had a game-high six blocks while DiGirolamo's assist was the 14th of her career.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are coming home. Syracuse is back at Tennity Ice Pavilion for its home opener next weekend, hosting CHA rival Mercyhurst.
The Orange play Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 before wrapping up the homestand at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.
