Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior back Roos Weers opened the scoring flood gates after a defensive first-half battle with a goal in the 35th minute during Syracuse's 4-2 non-conference field hockey win against California (3-8) on Sunday.
Weers scored off a corner for the second-straight game to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead just before halftime. Cal led the first half with five shots while Syracuse had three, two of which were on goal.
The 13th-ranked Orange (8-4) came out of the gate hot in the second half with Chiara Gutsche scoring in open play in the 38th minute to give the Orange a 2-0 lead. Momentum shifted, however, when Cal scored back-to-back goals in four minutes while Syracuse played man-down due to a yellow card.
Gutsche scored her second goal of the game with 18 minutes to play when she sent a rebounded save into the back of the goal giving 'Cuse a 3-2 edge.
Claire Cooke, who scored her first collegiate goal Friday night, tallied her second in as many games as insurance for the Orange in the 64th minute.
Cal pulled their goalkeeper for the final six minutes of play but the extra field player was not enough to overcome a two-goal deficit.
The Orange had one final opportunity with a corner as time expired but Cal's Femke Delissen made a defensive stop as the last line of defense with no goalkeeper on the Bears' defensive unit to preserve the score, 4-2.
Syracuse held a 12-11 advantage in shots, nine of which were on goal. Borg van der Velde made four saves in her seventh win of the season while Cal's Natalie Dalton matched her stats with four saves. The Orange edged California 5-4 in penalty corners.
'Cuse hits the road for a pair of games next weekend before returning home for the final home game of the season against Louisville on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. First, the Orange head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference matchup with No. 21 Wake Forest on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. and then will face Liberty in Durham, N.C., on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.
