Orange Take Control in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Bucknell

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 18th-ranked Syracuse University women's basketball team prevailed 70-56 against Bucknell in a game of scoring streaks, delivering the knockout punch during a four-minute stretch in the fourth quarter inside the Carrier Dome. Syracuse outscored the Bison 9-2 during that run to take a 13-point lead, 63-50, and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Redshirt freshman Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi scored six of her career-high 19 points during that run. She also had eight rebounds, one block and one steal in 21 minutes.
Junior Tiana Mangakahia added 13 points, four steals, two assists and two rebounds, while redshirt senior Miranda Drummond had seven points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Bucknell guard Abby Kapp and forward Ellie Mack led the Bison with 11 points each.
In the first half, each time Syracuse opened up a lead the Bison fought back. In the first quarter, sophomore Kiara Lewis hit a free throw to give the Orange a six-point lead, 12-6, with 4 minutes remaining. The make from the charity stripe closed out a 90-second, 6-0 run for the Orange. Bucknell responded with a 7-0 run to take a 13-12 lead with 2:48 left in the opening period.
In the second quarter, freshman Emily Engstler scored on back-to-back drives to the basket which gave the Orange an 11-point lead, 30-19, with 3:30 remaining in the first half. Bucknell then out-scored the Orange 9-0 in the next three minutes to cut the Cuse lead to two, 30-28, with 30 seconds left in the first half.
Syracuse put a little distance between the teams when Mangakahia found Drummond for a three-pointer on the left wing with two seconds remaining on the clock. Drummond turned it into a four-point play hitting the free throw she earned when Kyi English fouled her on the shot to put Syracuse up six, 34-28, at the half.
In the first 40 seconds of the third quarter, sophomore Amaya Finklea-Guity hit two free throws to give the Orange an 8-point lead, 36-28. Then Bucknell outscored Syracuse 14-5 to take a 42-41 lead with 4:04 left in the third period. Kapp hit two three-point field goals and Ally Johnson had one in the stretch for Bucknell. Then Djaldi-Tabdi and the Orange took control for good to emerge with the victory.
Syracuse will travel to the Cancun Challenge to play three games. The Orange begin the tournament against Kansas State on November 22 at 1:30 pm. Syracuse will also play Princeton on November 23 at 1:30 pm and 15th-ranked DePaul on November 24 at 1:30 pm. All games will be broadcast on ESPN Radio Syracuse (97.7FM) with Brian Higgins on the call.
