SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse hockey team gears up for a two-game weekend home series against Princeton starting Saturday, Nov. 10. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday in Tennity Ice Pavilion.
"[Princeton's] a solid team so this will be really good for us," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It's been a while since we played them, and other than Cornell, we really haven't played many Ivy League schools in a while. It should be a real good test for us. Our current roster has zero familiarity with them, so I think that's kind of neat. It looks to be a real good weekend."
ABOUT THE SERIES
Syracuse and Princeton have split the all-time series, 2-2-0. The last time these two met was in a pair of games back in 2010, and both matchups went in favor of the Tigers.
The home team has won every game in this series, and Syracuse holds the only overtime victory – a 1-0 win in 2009.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
After starting the season with two losses to then-No. 2 Wisconsin, Princeton has gone 3-0-1 in conference play for its current overall record of 3-2-1. The Tigers head to Syracuse following a 2-2 tie against Harvard at home last weekend.
Junior forward Carly Bullock has led the Tigers' scoring attack this season with her team-leading eight goals, an average of 1.33 goals per game – good for second in the country. Bullock has 52 goals in 71 career games.
The offense as a whole has been strong for Princeton through six games. The Tigers rank 10th in the nation in scoring offense.
On the defensive side, goaltenders Rachel McQuigge and Cassie Reale man the net for Princeton. Reale has started two of the last three games in net for the Tigers, allowing three goals, recording 35 saves and earning two wins. She was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for her 18-save performance in a win over Dartmouth.
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse is coming off a sweep last weekend on the road against Penn State. With the two wins, the Orange improved to 4-2-0 in conference play, placing them third in the standings.
Five different skaters scored for the Orange over the weekend, including two game-winning goals from junior forward Anonda Hoppner. Goaltender Maddi Welch produced a pair of strong performances against Penn State, carding 36 saves and allowing just two goals, including a shutout on Saturday.
With five goals in the game Sunday against the Nittany Lions, the Orange hit the five-goal mark in a game for the third time this season – a feat the team did not reach until February of last season.
On the season, the Orange have been led by sophomore forward Emma Polaski, who has a team-high five goals this season. The forward also leads the squad in power play goals, which has been a strong suit for the Orange this year. Syracuse is fifth in the country with nine power play goals this season.
ORANGE RECOGNIZED
Syracuse freshman forward Marielle McHale was recently tabbed College Hockey America Rookie of the Week for her performance at Penn State last weekend.
McHale earned the honor after scoring her first career goal against Penn State in the Orange's 5-2 win Sunday. McHale has two points this season, picking up her first career point in the form of an assist against Lindenwood on Oct. 20.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH FLANAGAN
"I like to think our team is building some confidence. It was a tough loss, but we played really well against Clarkson and then went to Penn State and performed well on both days. This is a good weekend to build off that momentum and carry that into this weekend. It's nice to be here in front of the home crowd, and hopefully the team will embrace it. We've been doing a lot of traveling - St. Louis, up to Clarkson, down to Cornell - so hopefully we can just settle in for this weekend and play well."
