SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's basketball team lost its first home game of the season, 73-64, Thursday night to Virginia Tech. Sophomore point guard Tiana Mangakahia had a game-high 13 assists en route to becoming the Orange's single-season leader in assists, passing Alexis Peterson who previously held the record with 231. 'Cuse moves to 17-6 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Virginia Tech improves to 15-8 and 4-6 in the league.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Tiana Mangakahia scored Syracuse's first six points of the game before a layup by Virginia Tech's Alexis Jean got the Hokies on the board at the 7:40 mark. Despite shooting 25 percent from the field in the first quarter, the Orange led 12-10 after the first break.
Virginia Tech took its first lead of the game at 6:59 in the second frame with a 3-pointer by Kendyl Brooks to lead 18-17. The Hokies led by seven but a fast-break layup by Digna Strautmane made it 28-23 with 1:32 left in the first half. Strautmane made the second of two free throws down the stretch to send both teams into halftime tied at 28-all.
The Hokies offense warmed up in the third quarter and scored a game-high 21 points to lead 49-43 entering the final quarter. Despite knocking down a game-best five 3-pointers in the final frame, Syracuse was unable to overcome the deficit and was outscored 24-21 in the final frame as VT won by nine.
OF NOTE
Mangakahia's 13 assists catapulted her past Libby McNulty (224) and Alexis Peterson (231) to become Syracuse's single-season assists leader with 234. She ranks fifth in ACC single-season history and is one assist shy of tying current South Carolina Head Coach and former UVA star Dawn Staley who tallied 235 in 1991. Mangakahia added 16 points for her ACC leading 11th double-double of the season.
Strautmane had her fourth-straight double figure scoring game and second-consecutive 20-point performance with 20 points going 8-for-20 from the field.
Freshman Amaya Finklea-Guity grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds while Miranda Drummond had a career and game-high 13 boards. The two become the first Orange duo to record double-figure rebound games since Strautmane and Drummond did so on Nov. 20, 2017, against Hartford.
