SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After losing the doubles point, the Syracuse tennis team rallied in singles winning five of six matches to earn a 5-2 win over Connecticut in Friday night's dual. The Orange improve to 4-1 while the Huskies fall to 3-2 overall.
"We are taking it one day at a time and it is a really long season so it was nice to see everybody stepping up," said head coach Younes Limam. "I was very proud of the team for how the bounced back after losing that doubles point. We were expecting a tough match and that's what we got in doubles and in singles. Our team really stepped up and never panicked after our tough doubles [round]."
A win by Syracuse's No. 2 duo (Miranda Ramirez and Nicole Mitchell) set the tone early in the match but Connecticut claimed victories on courts No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead overall.
The Orange tied the dual 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles by Ramirez, who defeated Connecticut's Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva, 6-0, 6-1. A win at the No. 2 singles by Sofya Golubovskaya gave Syracuse its first lead of the day, a 2-1 edge that would spark a run for the Orange.
Libi Mesh's 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles pulled Syracuse to within one point of a match victory but it was Dina Hegab who secured the Orange's fourth win of the season after defeating her Connecticut opponent in two sets (6-2, 6-3).
'Cuse and Connecticut split the final two matches at No. 3 and No. 6 singles for a 5-2 final score.
The Orange remain home at Drumlins for the second of a three-game homestand when they face Boston College in their first home ACC match of the season on Friday, Feb. 16. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
