Orange Downed by Wolfpack, 74-70

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Oshae Brissett tied his career-high with 25 points and added seven rebounds to lead Syracuse (17-9, 6-7 ACC) in a 74-70 loss to NC State (17-9, 7-6 ACC) Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome.
Sophomore Tyus Battle posted 17 points and Frank Howard added 16 points with six assists for the Orange.
Allerik Freeman led NC State with 17 points and five assists. Markell Johnson totaled 16 points, five boards and five assists.
How it was Decided
Johnson hit a 3-pointer to give NC State a 73-70 lead with 35 seconds to go. Omer Yurtseven made a free throw down the stretch to seal the victory.
Game Summary
Matthew Moyer made a layup and Howard knocked down a 3-pointer to open up a 10-5 Syracuse lead. NC State answered with a jumper but Paschal Chukwu dunked and Howard made a jumper to put the Orange up seven.
The Wolfpack cut the Syracuse lead down to one but Syracuse hit four free throws and Battle split a double-team and threw down a dunk to increase the lead back to seven. NC State responded with a 13-2 run to go up 30-26 with 3:54 remaining in the half.
A dunk by Brissett pulled the Orange back within one, but Freeman made a layup at the buzzer to give the Wolfpack a 35-32 halftime advantage.
After an NC State bucket to start the half, Battle made a layup and Brissett knocked down a trey to tie the game at 37. Four points from Brissett and a Howard jumper opened up a 47-41 Syracuse lead.
An 8-0 run gave the Wolfpack a 56-54 lead with 8:23 to play. Howard made a floater to tie it up but Sam Hunt knocked down a 3-point field goal to pull NC State back ahead. Battle made a pair of free throws but Freeman answered with a trey to give the Wolfpack a 62-58 advantage.
NC State extended its lead to seven with another 3-pointer by Hunt. Battle responded with a turn-around jumper. The two sides traded 3-pointers and Battle made a driving layup to pull the Orange within three. Syracuse stole the ball on the ensuing Wolfpack possession and Brissett tied things up at 70 with a 3-point field goal 1:02 remaining.
Numbers of Note
NC State made 27-of-49 (55.1 percent) shots from the field and Syracuse finished the game 23-of-44 (52.3 percent). The Orange held advantages in rebounds (25-23) and steals (11-5).
Brissett tied his career-high for the second time this season. He shot 8-of-13 from the floor, 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Brissett also posted 25 points against Georgetown and Buffalo this campaign.
The game consisted of seven ties and three lead changes. The Orange tied the game twice in the final 7:24, but were never able to regain the lead.
