ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Despite outshooting the Lions 31-23, the Syracuse ice hockey team fell short, 1-0, to Lindenwood, Friday night at Lindenwood Ice Arena.
"It was a tough one tonight," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We generated many grade-A chances but just couldn't find the back of the net. We have to put this one behind us and get back on track tomorrow afternoon."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game remained knotted at zero through the first two periods of action with the Syracuse and Lindenwood goalies recording 15 and 17 saves, respectively. Senior Stephanie Grossi threw four shots on goal in the first two periods and finished the night with a team-best six shots on goal.
Taylor Girard broke the 0-0 tie for Lindenwood, just beating Abbey Miller halfway through the final frame. The Orange's best opportunity came with just over seven minutes remaining in the game as Syracuse headed to the power play following a hooking call on Lindenwood. 'Cuse put a pair of shots on goal but Jolene deBruyn was a wall in front of the goal, keeping Syracuse out of the back of the net.
With under a minute to play, junior defensemen Allie Munroe laid out in front of the net twice to save a pair of empty-net goals, keeping the game a one-goal contest.
OF NOTE
The Orange won the battle in the faceoff circle, snagging 33 of the 62 faceoffs in the game. Redshirt junior Brooke Avery led 'Cuse, winning 15-of-22 draws.
Miller tallied 22 saves between the pipes for the Orange, marking her 18th game this season with 20 or more saves in a game.
UP NEXT
The Orange have one final chance at redemption as they take on the Lions for the regular season series finale on Saturday. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. EST.
