Syracuse's Moore Shares Insights On The Power Of The Mind
2/23/2018 5:02:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse, N.Y. – Justin Moore's sustained success as a coach is rooted in the development of the mind and body. Syracuse University's women's rowing head coach and the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year shared his insights as the keynote speaker at the 2018 Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) Institute for Rowing Leadership's What Works Summit in Boston, Mass. Moore and author Jon Wortmann presented Finding the Sweet Spot – Unlocking The Power Inside Each Athlete's Brain.
Moore and Wortmann discussed the radical brain science discoveries of the last 20 years and how to apply them. With the creation of MRI scans, there is now access to research that shows why critical parts of an athlete's brain fire and why. The presentation focused on teaching coaches how to be conscious of their own stress management system, the stress levels of their athletes and how to manage the mental aspects of the student-athlete relationships in each boat.
Moore is a six-time NCAA champion and U.S. Junior National Team coach. In 2017, Moore guided the Orange second varsity eight crew to a conference championship and ACC Crew of the Year honors. In his seven seasons at Syracuse, Moore has returned the Orange to national prominence, including two NCAA Championship invitations and six top-three conference finishes. Syracuse has earned a place in the top 20 in each of the last five seasons.
The Orange finished in 13th place at the NCAA Championship in each of the last two seasons. The 2016 at-large bid was the program's first trip to the national championship regatta since 2005.
Wortmann, a minister, writer and coach is the author of Mastering Communication at Work: How to Lead, Manage, and Influence, The Three Commitments of Leadership: How Clarity, Stability, and Rhythm Create Great Leaders, and Hijacked by Your Brain: Discovering the Path to Freedom from Stress.
Moore and the 2018 Orange begin the season on March 31 at the Doc Hosea Invite in Camden, N.J.
