Simmons' 3OT Winner Completes 5-Goal Comeback
2/24/2018 5:23:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
After trailing by five goals on two separate occasions, the No. 14 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (2-1) led a furious comeback, capped off by Dom Madonna sending a full-field pass to Ryan Simmons in triple overtime to bury the game-winner in another Carrier Dome thriller.
The Orange were limited to just one goal in the first half, but stormed out of the locker room to net nine of the final-12 goals and come away with the 11-10 victory over No. 9 Army (3-1). Syracuse was led by Nate Solomon, who scored twice and added a pair of assists. Madonna also delivered a stellar performance in net, stopping seven shots, including three at point-blank range in the overtime periods.
Jamie Trimboli (1-1), Stephen Rehfuss (1-1), Ryan Simmons (1-1) and David Lipka (2-0) all recorded multi-point days for the Orange.
After Lipka's second of the day pulled the Orange to within one at 9-8 with 9:25 remaining, Seth DeLisle won the ensuing faceoff to give 'Cuse another possession. Solomon then found Brendan Bomberry in front, who shot between his legs after a difficult catch to knot the game for the first time since the first quarter.
Solomon then scored on a man-up opportunity with under six minutes to play in regulation, to give Syracuse its first lead since 1-0. Army wouldn't go away quietly though, as Connor DeWitt evened things up at 10 with 5:11 remaining.
Army also had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but Brett Kennedy – who was making his first collegiate start in replace of an injured Tyson Bomberry – caused a Cadets turnover with seven seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Each team traded possessions with Madonna and AJ Baretto coming up with big saves on each end, but it was 'Cuse who struck last. After Madonna sent a full-field pass to a streaking Simmons, who could deliver the winner.
Syracuse will hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday, as the Orange travel for the ACC opener against Virginia.
