Orange Come Up Short on Senior Day
2/24/2018 6:31:00 PM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team came up short, 4-0, to No. 9 Robert Morris in the regular season finale, Saturday afternoon at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange honored their five graduating seniors – Stephanie Grossi, Dakota Derrer, Alysha Burriss, Megan Quinn and Abbey Miller – in a pregame ceremony.
"We had a lot of shots go right into the breadbasket and we didn't have sustained, in-zone pressure," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Most of our chances were coming off rushes through the neutral zone. Moving forward, if we get through Thursday's game, we could potentially play these guys so we have to figure out a way to get more offensive zone time and pucks on net."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Like in game one, the Orange played a gritty first period, outshooting the Colonials 12-7 through the first frame. But, again like the first game, Robert Morris managed to draw first blood as Anjelica Diffendal picked up the rebound and just beat senior Abbey Miller.
The Colonials tallied three more unanswered goals in the second period to take a 4-0 lead, a result that would remain the same through the final two periods of play.
The bright spot for the Orange was the Syracuse penalty kill which killed off all three of the power play opportunities for the Colonials. Syracuse limited Robert Morris to just four shots on goal during the three extra-man opportunities.
POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
With the regular season behind them, the Orange look ahead to the CHA Tournament that will begin on March 1. Syracuse squares off with RIT in the quarterfinals and, if they emerge victorious, will face either Robert Morris or Mercyhurst in the semifinals on March 2.
"We have to sweep [this game] out of here and put this game behind us," said Flanagan. "We have identified our shortcomings and the areas that we need to improve on, like our shot selection and our screens."
