BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Syracuse tennis team garnered its 10th win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Florida Atlantic University, Tuesday morning. The Orange took the doubles point and five of the six singles points to move to 10-2 on the season.
"It was a total team effort today," said head coach Younes Limam. "People forget that winning is tough, in order to beat good opponents, you have to be mentally tough enough to want to battle through the discomfort that you are putting your mind and body through. Our team wants to do what it takes daily to win. It's obvious and we are proud of who we are."
Syracuse used two doubles victories by the No. 2 pair (Anna Shkudun and Sofya Golubovskaya) and the No. 3 duo (Dina Hegab and Maria Tritou) to clinch the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles match came down to a tiebreak with the Owls narrowly edging the Syracuse pair of Miranda Ramirez and Gabriela Knutson, 7-6 (4).
The Orange used their momentum from the doubles round to take two quick two-set victories by Shkudun (6-2, 6-1) and Libi Mesh (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Golubovskaya tallied the match-clinching point for the Orange with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of her Florida Atlantic opponent to put Syracuse up, 4-0.
Ramirez and Tritou each fell behind early, dropping the first sets of their respective matches, but the Orange quickly rallied to take sets two and three and finish the 6-1 match for Syracuse.
