
Orange Fall Short in ACC Battle with Wake Forest

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 39th-ranked Orange women's tennis team lost a back-and-forth match with 16th-ranked Wake Forest, 4-3, on Sunday in a contest that was decided in a tie-breaker in the final match at Drumlins Country Club.

Syracuse (11-3 overall, 3-3 ACC) and Wake Forest (14-4, 3-2) battled to a 4-3 finish for third time in as many years. The Orange are 2-1 against the Deacons in that stretch.
"As you saw, there were a lot of very close matches and we were right there in a lot of them but they just didn't go our way," said head coach Younes Limam. "I couldn't be prouder of every single one of them. Everyone put in a great effort. It was really just two points that seperated us from winning or losing this match."

Wake Forest won the match when Eliza Omirou beat Orange sophomore Miranda Ramirez, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) in second singles. In the deciding third set, Ramirez opened up a 4-1 lead before Omirou came back to tie it at five and then take a 6-5 lead. Ramirez forced the tie breaker when she tied the set at six. With the tie-breaker tied at six, Omirou scored the final two points for the victory. Ramirez is now 9-4 (2-3 ACC) on the season.

Wake Forest opened the match winning the doubles point. Syracuse's 17th-ranked tandem of Gabby Knutson and Miranda Ramirez lost to 31st-ranked Chandler Carter and Emma Davis, 6-1, at first doubles and in third doubles, SU's Maria Tritou and Dina Hegab lost to, 6-3. In second doubles, Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun were beating Alexis Franco and Eliza Omirou, 5-2, when Wake Forest won the doubles point so the match was suspended.

Orange junior Dina Hegab won Syracuse's first point, beating Alexis Franco, 6-2, 6-1, in sixth singles. Hegab improved her record to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in ACC matches.

In third singles, Syracuse's Sofya Golubovskaya beat Chandler Carter, 7-5, 6-2, to give the Orange a 2-1 lead in the match. After a back and forth first set, Golubovskaya fell behind 2-0 to start the second set, but scored six straight points to win the match. The freshman from Russia is 10-2 overall (4-1 ACC) this season.

Wake Forest's Anna Ulyashchenko tied the match at two with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Orange graduate student Anna Shkudun. After Ulyashchenko won the first set, she jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second. Shkudun fought back to tie the set at 5 before Ulyashchenko won the final two games for the victory. Shkudun is 6-6 (0-4 ACC) this season.

Eleventh-ranked Gabriela Knutson put Syracuse ahead, 3-2, with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory against 36th-ranked Emma Davis. In the tie breaker, Knutson opened up a 5-2 lead before Davis scored two straight to make it 5-4. Then Knutson scored two of the next three points for the victory. Knutson is 11-1 this season, including a 5-0 record in ACC matches.

Wake Forest tied the match at three when the Deacons Mary Caroline Meredith beat Syracuse junior Libi Mesh in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6. Mesh is 8-5 (1-3) this season.
