GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following a dominant performance in both singles and doubles action, junior Gabriela Knutson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week. This is the first weekly conference honor for the Czech Republic native this season.
Knutson showed her ability to compete at a high-level, defeating two top-ranked conference opponents this past weekend. The junior played a three-set battle, including two tiebreak sets, against No. 61 Natalie Novotna from Virginia Tech on Friday, coming out ahead 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.
On Sunday, Knutson squared-off with her toughest opponent to date this season in No. 8 Alle Sanford from the top-ranked team in the nation, North Carolina. This time, it was a two-set effort for Knutson as she downed her opposition 7-6, 7-6 to tally the only point for the Orange in the match.
In doubles action, Knuston, alongside her doubles partner Miranda Ramirez, went 1-1 with the only loss coming to the No. 9 duo from North Carolina.
The Czech Republic native is now 9-0 on the season at the No. 1 singles position and holds a 7-1 record in doubles action. Her performance this season has catapulted her to 11th in the Oracle/ITA National Singles Rankings, while her contributions in the doubles event have pushed her and Ramirez to No. 17 in the nation.
Knutson and the rest of the Orange are back in action on March 13 when they take on Florida Atlantic University at 9 a.m.
