TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior Gabriela Knutson continues to make a name for herself in the collegiate tennis world, becoming the first ever Orange to crack the top five in the Oracle/ITA Tennis National Singles Rankings.
The Czech Republic native went 1-1 in singles action this past weekend while posting a 2-0 record in doubles play. Knutson defeated No. 25 Carla Touly (Florida State) 6-0 in the first set before taking the match on a retirement by Touly. The junior's only loss this weekend came at the hands of No. 6 Estela Perez-Somarriba, a 4-6, 4-6 defeat against the Miami opposition.
Despite a pair of team losses over the weekend, Syracuse only dropped three spots to No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA Team Rankings. The Orange came up short, 5-2, against No. 19 Florida State on Friday, before facing a 6-0 shutout at No. 19 Miami on Sunday.
'Cuse has faced eight ranked teams this season, posting a 4-4 record in those eight contests. Today's poll marks the sixth consecutive week that the Orange have appeared in the Oracle/ITA top 50.
Knutson and her doubles partner Miranda Ramirez recorded a pair of wins at first doubles, defeating the Florida State and Miami duos, 6-4, 6-3, respectively. With a 12-4 record in doubles play this season, the pair checks in at No. 13 nationally in the Oracle/ITA Doubles Rankings.
The Orange return to Drumlins for their final two home matches of the season, starting with a matchup with No. 4 Duke on Friday. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. and free pizza will be available to all attendees.
