No. 13 Orange Seek to Claim the Goes Trophy Saturday at Ten Eyck
4/13/2018 9:11:00 PM | Men's Rowing
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Goes Trophy has not been in Syracuse since 2011 but on Saturday morning, the No. 13 Orange will challenge No. 11 Cornell and No. 15 Navy at James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse for a chance to bring home the treasured prize for the 12th time in program history.
The men's rowing team began the season ranked No. 10 but after a loss to then-No. 12 Wisconsin at home last weekend, the Orange dropped three spots to No. 13 in this week's US Rowing Collegiate Coaches Poll.
Each team will race four varsity eight boats beginning at 8 am. Syracuse's first varsity eight, which is led by coxswain Dominic Santora, finished the 2000m course in 6:10.55 against Wisconsin in a race that saw nearly every type of weather for an early spring day.
Also on the line Saturday is the Stagg Trophy, which Syracuse last won in 2011. Last season, Navy took home both cups while Cornell retained both for the previous three years.
About the Goes Trophy
Clifford "Tip" Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools.
About the Stagg Trophy
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman.
