Balanced Offense Pushes Orange Past Niagara

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eight different Syracuse (23-18) players recorded at least one RBI as the Orange won a pair of games over Niagara (10-25), 10-6 and 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Game 1: Syracuse 10, Niagara 6
Syracuse overcame a four-run deficit on its way to the victory. Junior Bryce Holmgren led the way, batting 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Freshman Michala Maciolek went 2-for-3 with her first career homerun and freshman Gabby Teran finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti improved to 8-6 on the year after conceding five runs with six strikeouts in the first four innings. Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched three hitless innings and surrendered an unearned run to pick up her second save of the season. She struck out three.
A grand-slam in the top of the first gave Niagara an early four run lead but it didn't last long. In the bottom half of the inning, Holmgren and senior Rachel Burkhardt each singled home a run. Junior Hannah Dossett added an RBI sacrifice fly that brought home a run and Teran also scored on the play to tie it up at four.
Holmgren added two more RBI in the second with a single up the middle to give 'Cuse the lead and a solo homer pulled the Purple Eagles back within one. Maciolek extended the Syracuse lead back to two in the third with her solo shot to right center.
An RBI single from Teran in the sixth along with back-to-back RBI groundouts by Burkhardt and Hearn extended the Orange lead to five. Niagara added an unearned run in the seventh to conclude to scoring.
Game 2: Syracuse 7, Niagara 1
Sophomore Alexa Romero tied her career-high with 14 strikeouts and pitched a complete game two-hitter to fuel Syracuse to the win. She gave up one run and walked six.
Junior Alicia Hansen went 1-for-3 with a homerun, two RBI, a run and a walk. Holmgren finished 1-for-2 with two runs and junior Andrea Bombace added a pinch-hit two-run blast.
Hansen's two run homer gave the Orange the lead in the third. Later in the inning, Teran tripled to right center to score Holmgren and came home on a Niagara throwing error.
An RBI single got the Purple Eagles on the board in the fifth and 'Cuse answered right back when Holmgren scored on a throwing error. Bombace's two-run homer in the sixth concluded the scoring.
Of Note
'Cuse combined to score 17 runs on 22 hits in the doubleheader. Seven different Syracuse players finished the doubleheader batting at least .500.
The Orange improve to 7-1 against in-state foes in 2018.
Hansen totaled her 100th consecutive start for 'Cuse in game one of the doubleheader, the longest active streak on the team.
Syracuse moves to 22-2 this season when scoring at least three runs.

The Orange host a three-game series against NC State starting on Friday, Apr. 20 at 4 p.m.
