4/19/2018 2:55:00 PM | Track and Field
Eight members of the Syracuse track and field teams were honored for their success in the classroom, combined with their athletic achievements on the track this indoor season, earning spots on the All-ACC Academic Team.
Six men and two women received the honor, as Iliass Aouani (civil engineering), Philo Germano (sport venue and event management), David Gilstrap (health and physical education), Angelo Goss (instructional design foundations), Matt Moore (communication and rhetorical studies) and Aidan Tooker (communication and rhetorical studies) represented the men's team. Paige Stoner (selected studies in education) and Tia Thevenin (psychology) were the women's team honorees.
Every member of the All-ACC Academic Teams earned either All-America or All-ACC status this season and maintained a 3.0 GPA or better. The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
Aouani racked up two All-ACC nods at the 2018 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, taking second team honors in both the 3000 and 5000-meters. He placed fifth in each event, to earn eight team points for the Orange.
Germano was the ACC runner-up in the 5000-meters, collecting First Team All-ACC Honors. He then went on to win the ECAC/IC4A Championships in the mile.
Gilstrap was a Second Team All-ACC selection after taking fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at the ACC Championships.
Goss spent much of the season in the top-four if the NCAA ranks in the 60-meter hurdles. In his first season with the Orange, he earned USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors, qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He went into the ACC Championships with the league's best time, before being injured in the event.
Moore is another NCAA qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles. He took 10th overall at the NCAA Championships to earn USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors, after earning a silver medal in the event at the ACC Championship.
Tooker was the ACC runner-up in the 3000-meters, taking second behind teammate Justyn Knight. He finished seventh in the 5k the day before taking First Team All-ACC honors in the 3k.
Stoner, who was the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year in cross country, was a USTFCCCA First Team All-American, who took eighth in the 5000-meters at the NCAA Championship. She also came away with bronze medals in both the 3000 and 5000 to earn All-ACC honors in each.
Thevenin took fifth at the ACC Championships in the 60-meter hurdles, to earn Second Team All-ACC accolades.
The Orange continue their outdoor slate at a trio of meets this weekend.
