CARY, N.C. – The seventh-seeded Syracuse tennis team is moving on to the third round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament after defeating 15th-seeded Pittsburgh, 4-1, Thursday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park. This is just the second ACC Tournament win in Syracuse program history with the first coming against North Carolina State in 2016.
With the win over Pittsburgh, Syracuse eclipsed the 17-win mark, marking just the third time in program history that the Orange have recorded 17 or more wins, the other two instances occurring in 2010 and 2011.
The Orange will square-off with second-seeded Georgia Tech on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park. Syracuse recorded the biggest win in program history, defeating No. 3 Georgia Tech, 4-3, earlier this season.
Following a first round bye, Syracuse came into the ACC Tournament match ready to play, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead with a pair of victories in doubles play. At second doubles, Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun recorded a 6-0 shutout for the first doubles point. The first doubles pair of Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez followed closely behind with a 6-1 win in their match.
In singles action, Pittsburgh tied the match at one as junior Dina Hegab retired from her match early in set one.
Knutson quickly put the Orange back on top with a two-set victory, 6-1, 7-5, never once giving up the lead in either of her sets. The junior moves to 18-3 on the season in singles play and is just two wins (singles or doubles) shy of the 50-win mark this year.
Similarly, Shkudun held a strong lead in her match at fourth singles, downing the Pittsburgh opponent in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, and giving Syracuse the 3-1 lead.
With all eyes on the second singles match, Ramirez played a tough first set, coming back from down 5-4 to win the set 7-5. The sophomore carried her momentum into set two, cruising to a 6-2 victory and ultimately clinching the match, 4-1, for the Orange.
