Orange Fall Short in ACC Quarterfinal
4/27/2018 4:07:00 PM | Tennis
CARY, N.C. – Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, the 27th-ranked Syracuse tennis team could not stop the force that was fourth-ranked Georgia Tech, losing 4-2 to the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Tournament Quarterfinal on Friday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
The doubles portion of the match was anything but easy as Syracuse battled for each and every point. At first doubles, Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez took a 4-3 lead over No. 1 Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones, but the duo from Tech quickly crept back in the match, tying it at five-all before ultimately coming out ahead 7-5.
In third doubles action, Syracuse's Maria Tritou and Nicole Mitchell found themselves in a bind early, down 4-2 to the third pair from Georgia Tech. However, the duo gutted out a gritty match and emerged victorious 7-5.
With the doubles point on the line, Anna Shkudun and Sofya Golubovskaya played a competitive match that saw several ties. The second duo from 'Cuse persevered to give the Orange the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
The momentum shifted in favor of the Yellow Jackets in singles action as Tech tied the match at one with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Syracuse's Tritou at fifth singles. The Yellow Jackets continued to build momentum, recording a pair of two-set victories at fourth and fifth singles to take a 3-1 lead.
As is expected in a top-15 matchup, the first singles competition between No. 4 Knutson and No. 13 Hourigan was a three-set affair. Knutson took an early 1-0 lead on a 6-2 first-set victory but dropped the second set 6-4 to force a third frame. The junior rallied in the third set to record a 6-3 win and pull the Orange to within one at 3-2.
In the final two matches, both Ramirez (second singles) and Mesh (sixth singles) rallied from first-set losses to win the second and force a third set. The Yellow Jackets ultimately prevailed, as Ramirez came up short, 7-5 in the third set to give Georgia Tech the match point. Mesh's match went unfinished with the junior sitting tied at five-all in the third set.
The Orange will now await the 2018 NCAA Tournament selection announcement.
