Hawryschuk Leads Orange in Loss to No. 5 Tar Heels in ACC Quarters

DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Emily Hawryschuk scored five goals to lead No. 17/19 Syracuse in its 21-12 loss to No. 5/5 North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament in Durham, N.C.

HOW IT WAS DECIDED
North Carolina (13-3) scored the first three goals of the game to take an early lead. Junior Nicole Levy put Syracuse (9-9) on the scoreboard when she found the back of the net off an assist from senior Riley Donahue, but the Tar Heels tallied the next four goals of the game to extend their lead to 7-1 with 25:53 on the clock.

Katie Hoeg's goal at the 14:07 mark gave North Carolina its largest lead of the half at 11-2, before senior Neena Merola scored to spark the Orange on a 4-1 scoring run to cut the deficit to 12-6 with 7:26 remaining. Sophomore Emily Hawryschuk had two of her three first-half goals during the offensive outburst. However, the Tar Heels ended the half with two unanswered goals to take a 14-6 lead at intermission.

Hawryschuk scored on a pass from Levy to start the second half, but North Carolina answered with back-to-back goals to push its lead back to eight, 16-8. The Tar Heels led by as many as 11 before Syracuse tallied three of the final four goals of the game, the last coming from Hawryschuk for her fifth of the day, for the 21-12 final

Hawryschuk's performance marked the third time this season she has scored five or more goals in a game. She leads the Orange in points (61) and goals (53).

Sophomore Vanessa Costantino added three points (1g, 2a), and redshirt sophomore Cara Quimby scored twice. Donahue finished with two assists, giving her 82 in her career. She now ranks seventh on Syracuse's career leader list.

Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Van Middelem came in off the bench and recorded a season-high 12 saves. It is the first double-digit save performance of her career.
