SYRACUSE, N.Y. – North Carolina (28-24, 15-7 ACC) scored five runs in the fifth inning to pull ahead in its 5-1 win over Syracuse (27-19, 8-12 ACC) Friday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium. The setback snaps 'Cuse's season-high seven-game winning streak.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 28 at 1 and 3 p.m. The Orange will honor their six seniors in-between the two contests.
Juniors Alicia Hansen and Bryce Holmgren each finished 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Alexa Romero dropped to 17-12 on the season after surrendering five runs (four unearned) in 4.2 innings of work. Freshman Miranda Hearn kept UNC off the board for the remainder of the game.
Brittany Pickett pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and added a three-run homerun at the plate to lead the Tar Heels.
How it was Decided
Syracuse jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Holmgren doubled off the wall in right field and freshman Gabby Teran bunted her over to third. An RBI fielder's choice by senior Faith Cain scored Holmgren.
North Carolina tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice and took the lead on an Orange error. Pickett's three-run homer with two-outs capped the scoring.
Of Note
Hansen and Holmgren each increase their double tally to 11 on the year. The two are tied for the team lead.
Freshman Michala Maciolek threw out a runner at second base that was attempting to steal which is the second time she's caught a runner stealing this season.
Romero allowed four hits with three strikeouts and two walks and Hearn surrendered two hits.
