Burkhardt Walks Off on Senior Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Rachel Burkhardt hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Syracuse (28-19, 9-12 ACC) to a 1-0 win over North Carolina (28-25, 15-8 ACC) Saturday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Burkhardt finished 2-for-3 and juniors Alicia Hansen and Bryce Holmgren each doubled. Senior Jessica Heese batted 1-for-2.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti was lights out in the circle for the Orange. She pitched a complete game shutout and conceded three hits, one walk and struck out five.
Game two of the doubleheader, the series finale, was cancelled due to heavy rain and will not be rescheduled.
How it was Decided
Back-to-back two-out singles from Burkhardt and Heese in the second inning gave 'Cuse its first baserunners of the game. The Tar Heels forced a groundout on the ensuing batter to get out of the jam.
Hansen and Holmgren each doubled in the third and sixth innings, respectively, but Syracuse was unable to capitalize.
North Carolina moved a runner onto third base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Gatti forced an inning ending groundout keep the Tar Heels off the board.
Burkhardt's leadoff homer in the bottom half of the inning gave the Orange a special moment to celebrate on senior day.
Of Note
The walk-off win is the second of the season for 'Cuse. Freshman Neli Casares-Maher scored on an error in a 9-8 win over Grand Canyon earlier this season.
Burkhardt's walk-off homerun is the eighth in program history and the first since Kelly Saco put one over the fence in the bottom of the seventh in a 1-0 win over Rutgers on Apr. 22, 2012.
The Orange finish ACC play at 9-12 and await their seed in the ACC Championship. Their first game in the tournament will be on Wednesday, May 9.
