OXFORD, Miss. – It's NCAA Tournament time! The Orange kick off their second-ever NCAA Tournament bid on Friday when 'Cuse faces Wichita State at 1 p.m. ET in Oxford, Miss. This will be the first meeting between the two schools in program history.
Â
The Orange are coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, where they fell to No. 4 Georgia Tech 4-2. Prior to the quarterfinals, Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh 4-1 for just their second ACC Tournament victory in program history.
Â
In the most recent Oracle/ITA Rankings, Syracuse retained its position at No. 27 in the Team Rankings, while junior Gabriela Knutson checked in at No. 5 in the Singles Rankings. As a doubles duo, Knutson and Ramirez jumped two spots to No. 8, with a 15-5 record in doubles action this season.
Â
Knutson heads into the NCAA Tournament with a 19-3 record, having moved into eighth place all-time in Syracuse program history with 136 career wins. The junior was tabbed to the All-ACC First Team, becoming the first ever Orange to receive ACC First Team honors.
Â
Head coach Younes Limam is just two wins shy of his 50th career win, a milestone he can eclipse this weekend with a pair of wins in Oxford.
Â
Wichita State heads into the match with a similar 17-8 record this season. Like Syracuse, the Shockers won their opening match of the American Championship but fell in the semifinals to Tulsa, 4-2. Wichita's best win of the season came when the Shockers defeated No. 36 Kansas State, 4-1 in mid-April.
Â
The winner of Friday's first round match will advance to the second round of the tournament and face the winner of Ole Miss/Missouri State. The winner of each site advances to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the 16 teams will compete for the national championship May 17-22.Â
