Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse University's men's rowing team closed out the cup race season with a victory over No. 8 Dartmouth for the Packard Cup Saturday morning on The Connecticut River. The No. 12 Orange varsity eight edged Dartmouth to claim its second Packard Cup in three years.
The third varsity eight finished the cup race season undefeated after beating Dartmouth in its final race before the EARC Sprints on May 13 in Worcester, Ma.
Coach Reischman's Thoughts
On the varsity eight…
I thought we were pretty solid out of the start gate. It looked like we were moving the boat a little bit better than the last couple of weeks. I think the key to the racing was when we shifted down to the race pace from our start sequence we had good speed and it looked sustainable. I think that is the part that we were missing the previous couple of weeks. We certainly had the effort but it didn't look like the rhythm didn't look sustainable and I thought that was the big difference this week. We were able to push out on them in the first 1000m and then Dartmouth raised their cadence at about the 1000m mark and made a spirited push and I thought we kept our composure. We didn't panic or change, we stuck to our rhythm and grinded out the third 500 meters. I thought we executed that last 500 really well.
On the second varsity eight…
I think the guys were a little disappointed today. There was a little confusion on the start sequence that caught them off guard a little and they kind of got scrambled. I thought despite, that the effort was there. I didn't think the rhythm was as good as we have seen this season but I think they are eager to get back into it this week.
On the third varsity eight…
They were awesome, as per usual. It was an interesting race. I doubt there was more than a seat between either crew down the race course. This crew has been accustomed to getting down and rowing through it but they had a good start today and Dartmouth was game for a fist fight. They didn't back down at all and we were able to pull it out. I think it is our first crew to go undefeated in cup season since our varsity eight did so in 2008. They are a crew that really loves to race.
On the varsity four…
I thought the effort was good with those guys. We have been changing lineups a lot on them and they have been handling that well. I think Dartmouth's crew looked really strong. The Dartmouth 4V4+ and 3V8 were both really great crews.
Saturday marked the 29th Packard Cup win for the Orange since it was first contested in 1960.
About the Packard Cup
Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Cup in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU Class of 1906). The cup, made of sterling silver, is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship.
